The life and times of General Buck Kernan
I was born in the year 1873, in a small town in upstate New York. My father was a doctor and my mother was a schoolteacher. I was the middle child of three, with an older sister and a younger brother. Growing up, I was always interested in military history and strategy, and I loved to read about great generals like Napoleon Bonaparte and Alexander the Great. When I was 17, I convinced my parents to let me join the Army, and I began my military career as a second lieutenant during the Spanish-American War.
After the war, I remained in the Army and rose through the ranks quickly. By 1903, I had been promoted to brigadier general, making me one of the youngest generals in the US Army at that time. In 1904, I married my wife Mary Anne, and we had our first child, a son named John.
During World War 1, I served as commander of various infantry divisions on the Western Front in France. After the war ended, I stayed on in Europe for several years as part of the Army of Occupation force stationed in Germany. In 1921, Mary Anne died tragically from influenza while we were living in Germany; our son John was only 17 at that time.
I returned to America after Mary Anne’s death and continued serving in the Army until 1924 when I retired with over 30 years of service under my belt. In retirement, I wrote my memoirs and enjoyed spending time with my grandchildren (I now have 5). These days, at age 95, I am still going strong!
His military career
John McCain was born on August 29, 1936, in Panama Canal Zone, where his father, John S. McCain Jr., was stationed as a naval officer. He attended many different schools as a child, eventually graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator and flew attack aircraft from carriers. In 1967, during the Vietnam War, he was shot down over Hanoi and taken prisoner by the North Vietnamese. He was held for more than five years and tortured before being released in 1973. Upon his return to the United States, he retired from the Navy as a captain.

Modernization is also crucial for keeping up with evolving threats. We must constantly update our tactics and weapons in order to stay ahead of those who would do us harm. This includes investing in new technologies as well as ensuring that our existing platforms are able to meet future needs.
Finally, people are always going to be the most important asset for any military organization. Without talented and dedicated individuals serving in its ranks, no force will ever be truly successful. That’s why we need to focus on attracting and retaining the best possible personnel.”

I try to live by these words every day. Laughing is good for the soul, and we should all do it as much as possible. Apologizing keeps us humble and shows that we’re willing to admit when we’re wrong. And letting go is so important because holding onto anger and resentment only hurts ourselves in the end.
Life is too short to waste time on negativity and unhappiness. So I choose to focus on the positive and enjoy every moment I can.
