History of First General Baptist Church
The First General Baptist Church was founded in 1866 by a group of African American Baptists who had recently been emancipated from slavery. The church was originally located in the town of Lexington, Kentucky.
The founders of the church were deeply committed to their faith and to helping other African Americans who were struggling to adjust to life after emancipation. They were also determined to create a place of worship that would be free from the racism and discrimination they had experienced at other churches.
The First General Baptist Church quickly became a vital part of the African American community in Lexington. It provided its members with a sense of community and support, as well as a place to worship freely without fear of discrimination.
In the early years of the church, many of its members were actively involved in the civil rights movement. In fact, several key figures in the movement, including Martin Luther King Jr., spoke at the church on numerous occasions.
Today, the First General Baptist Church remains an active and vibrant part of the Lexington community. It continues to provide its members with a supportive environment where they can worship freely and work together to make positive changes in their community.
Beliefs of First General Baptist Church
We believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. It is our authority in all matters of faith and practice.
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life, performed miracles, died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, was resurrected from the dead and ascended into heaven. He will return to earth to judge the living and the dead.
We believe that all people are sinners by nature and choice and are under just condemnation without hope apart from divine grace. We believe that salvation from sin is available to all who repent and put their faith alone in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior resulting in regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
We believe in water baptism by immersion for those who have repented of their sins and put their faith alone in Jesus Christ for salvation. We also teach that every believer should be filled with the Holy Spirit evidenced by speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
