What is superscoring?
Superscoring is when a school considers your best section scores across all the ACT test dates you submit. For example, if you take the ACT three times, and your highest composite score is a 32, but your highest Math and English score is a 33, then superscoring would give you that highest Math and English score in place of your lowest Math and English score, resulting in a new composite score of 33.
How does it work?
Georgia Tech will superscore the ACT for students who have taken the test more than once. This means that Georgia Tech will use the highest score from each individual section, regardless of whether it was achieved on the same testing date or on a different testing date. For students who have taken the ACT multiple times, superscoring can provide a significant boost to your score.
What are the benefits?
There are a number of benefits to superscoring the ACT. For one, it allows you to focus on your strongest areas and potentially improve your score. Additionally, superscoring can help boost your chances of getting into a competitive school, as it demonstrates your academic readiness for college-level work.
What are the drawbacks?
While Georgia Tech does superscore the ACT, there are some drawbacks to consider. First, if you take the ACT more than once, Georgia Tech will only consider your highest score. This means that if you take the test multiple times and improve your score, Georgia Tech will only consider your highest score. This could work against you if you have a lower score on one of your testing dates.
Another drawback is that Georgia Tech will only superscore the ACT for students who submit all of their ACT scores. So, if you take the ACT multiple times but only submit your highest score, Georgia Tech will not superscore your ACT score.
Finally, keep in mind that some colleges and universities do not superscore the ACT. This means that they will only consider your highest composite score, regardless of how many times you took the test. So, if you’re considering applying to colleges that do not superscore the ACT, it may be in your best interest to submit all of your ACT scores.
How does it affect your chances of admission?
Admissions decisions at Georgia Tech are based on a holistic review of your complete application, including your academic performance, extracurricular involvement, essays, and letters of recommendation. Standardized test scores are just one part of our review process and are viewed within the context of your entire application.
We will consider your highest composite ACT score and all corresponding subscores from a single testing administration, regardless of whether those scores were achieved on the ACT Plus Writing Test or the ACT with Writing Test administered prior to September 2015. Additionally, if you take the ACT more than once, we will use your highest composite score along with all corresponding subscores from a single administration in our review. Our focus is on your individual achievement rather than whether you took advantage of test prep courses or had access to better educational opportunities.
Should you take the ACT again?
For colleges that superscore the ACT, you should always send in your highest composite score from a single test date. In general, you should only retake the ACT if you have a good reason to believe that you can improve your score. For example, if you got a 26 composite on one ACT but a 30 on another, you should send in both scores to Georgia Tech. Then, Georgia Tech will take your highest composite score (30) and superscore it with your highest section scores from both tests (26 English, 28 Math, etc.).
How to prepare for the ACT
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as each student’s situation is unique. However, here are some general tips to keep in mind as you prepare for the ACT:
– Take practice tests and strive to improve your score on each one.
– Understand the content of the test and focus your studies on the areas where you are weakest.
– Make a study schedule and stick to it.
– Get plenty of rest and eat healthy foods on test day to fuel your brain.
